Parents Internet Safety Focus Group

Who are we?

Whilst it is important that young people are instructed and trained in using the internet safely and responsibly, it is crucial that parents, guardians and teachers are also supported to understand the issues and the role they can take in keeping their children safe online.

The Parents Internet Safety Focus was established in March 2008 and will be working towards achieving the following objectives:

  • Assess the current awareness that parents in Egypt have of e-safety issues.
  • Train the parents in understanding the privileges of using the internet as well as the online risks and the responsibility different stakeholders have in better protecting the children.
  • Hear from other parents about the fears and anxieties they have regarding their children’s use of the internet and mobile phones.
  • Discuss with the parents their needs in terms of training to better support their children in the internet but also override their fears and concerns.
  • Keep open channels of communications and dialogue with the Net-Aman and coordinate joint activities.

Training Sessions for Parents Focus Group

Third Training Session for the Parents' Internet Safety Group on 25th June 2008

About the Survey
The Parents Internet Safety Focus Group produced a survey entitled "Parents Survey: Egyptian Young People and the Internet. The purpose of the survey is to help capturing the views that the parents had on issues relating to children’s use of the Internet.

Recent Activities:

  • The Parents Internet Safety Focus Group has organized a five-day-training of trainers (TOT) for selected parents from five governorates. Five parents selected from each governorate and were trained to form CORE groups in their own governorates through training others. These groups will then work through their respective NGOs to spread the message through skilled and well equipped trainers who will train other "Focus Groups" in each governorate.
  • Parents awareness sessions were conducted in five different governorates during the months of November and December of 2009.
