Internet Safety for Young People

Track two aims at educating young people about online safety and security issues. This has been approached in two ways, firstly through the establishment of a youth led Internet Safety Focus Group, and secondly through the establishment of a supporting Parents Awareness Group.
The objective of the youth group is to empower children and young people with the ability to identify and deal with harmful content on computers, the internet and mobile phones and to learn how to use technology both safely and responsibly.
The Youth Internet Safety Focus group, Net-Aman, coordinates awareness raising activities amongst their peers. The group meets regularly to achieve their objectives.
Net-Aman have pioneered research into the current awareness levels of internet safety issues amongst young people as well as creating and designing culturally and age- relevant Arabic language educational material. They have also begun implementing their outreach program through schools, colleges, and youth centres in Cairo.
Net-Aman has worked closely with the Parents Internet Safety Focus Group to ensure that parents are equipped with the knowledge that they need to support and guide their children with regards to the internet and to understand the potential dangers online.
Microsoft Egypt, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, has led the outreach effort with regards to the internet safety and security campaign. This is the first time such campaign is driven in the Middle East, and Microsoft has contributed in a number of ways; financial, in-kind, and human resources.
Activities have included engaging stakeholders in roundtable discussions; arranging training events for trainers, teachers, prosecutors and judges; participating in national conferences; and engaging Microsoft employees in a volunteer programme for driving awareness about internet safety.
